Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is the labor law that affords eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year if they decide to stay home in the wake of their child's birth or adoption, or serious personal or family member illness. The law only applies to businesses that employ at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius. To receive FMLA benefits, an employee must have been with the employer for at least one year and worked at least 1,250 hours during the past 12 months.
The Law was passed by the United States Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1993.
