Monitoring is a continuous process of collecting enterprise data. Since similar processes that are limited in their scope are known as data gathering, monitoring can also be defined as continuous data gathering.
Definitions
According to the BABOK Guide (3rd edition),
- Monitoring. Collecting data on a continuous basis from a solution in order to determine how well a solution is implemented compared to expected results. See also metric; indicator.
According to the ITIL Foundation 4e by Axelos,
- Monitoring. Repeated observation of a system, practice, process, service, or other entity to detect events and to ensure that the current status is known.
