There are several ways to track student progress in Moodle. Many of them such as Badges, Grading System etc. have been discussed in this course. Among the most important and common ones is Activity completion Activity completion or completion tracking allow students to see their progress throughout the course using check boxes.
- Teacher can set completion criteria in a specific activity's settings. A check (tick) appears against the activity when the student meets this criterion such as viewing, receiving a certain score or a student marking it as complete.
- Activity completion or Completion Tracking should enabled by the administrator site wide in the course settings as Administration > Site administration > Advanced features check the "Enable completion tracking" box.
- Students may also mark the check boxes manually, to indicate completion of an activity.
Activity Completion Reports
- Activity Completion Reports are also available for the teachers to check the progress of their students in a course. The teacher can see an overview of who has completed what in the activity completion report in Course administration > Reports > Activity completion.
- Activity completion info can be viewed by managers, teachers and non-editing teachers and any other user with set capabilities.
- A teacher may also mark an activity complete on behalf of a student from the Activity completion report if they have the capability Override activity completion (which is enabled by default.)
Course Completion
It is an extension of activity completion, enabling Course completion allows for a course to be officially marked as finished, either manually or automatically according to specified criteria. Here, both students and teachers can watch progress through a course. If the Course completion status block is added, students can see their progress during the course.
- Teachers can view the overall progress of students towards course completion from Course administration>Reports>Course completion.
Other information
- Activity completion can also be linked to Restrict access in order to allow the teacher to set criteria upon which a student is allowed to progress through a course and access materials.
- Each type of activity has different completion requirements. For example, a page might have the requirement to View. Such Activity settings include Forum Completion settings, Lesson Completion settings etc.
- Changing Activity Completion settings in Bulk-Within a course, the default settings for activity completion may be changed and several activities may have their completion settings updated at once,
