Contingent worker is a temporary, freelance, or contract worker whose employment is contingent on demand for her or his services.

According to Management by Robbins and Coulter (14th edition),

Contingent worker. A temporary, freelance, or contract worker whose employment is contingent on demand for her or his services.

According to the HRBoK Guide,

Contingent worker. Part-time or temporary employee. A person who is hired part-time to work under a contractor for a fixed period of time.
