An end-user application (alternatively known as end-user software application or end-user program; hereinafter, the App) is a software application that functions are initiated by end-users rather than by another software application or algorithm. To interact with end-users directly, every App shall have its user interface (UI).

The Apps usually provide specific functions for an individual or group of individuals, collectively called end users, and are not a part of enterprise-wide information technology processing.

The Apps include database programs, word processors, Web browsers and spreadsheets. Figuratively speaking, applications software sits on top of systems software because it is unable to run without the operating system and system utilities.

In information technology, the term end-user is used to distinguish the person for whom a hardware or software product is designed from the developers, installers, and servicers of the product.
