Effort sponsor is an individual or a group that provides resources and support for the project as a project sponsor, program, or portfolio, and is accountable for enabling success. See also product owner.

- Sponsor. A stakeholder who is responsible for initiating the effort to define a business need and develop a solution that meets that need. They authorize the work to be performed and control the budget and scope for the initiative.
- According to the ITIL Foundation 4e by Axelos,
- Sponsor. A person who authorizes budget for service consumption. Can also be used to describe an organization or individual that provides financial or other support for an initiative.
Sponsor vs product owner
- Both the Sponsor and product owner represent the customer's interests, but the owner is usually closer to the developers than the Sponsor. First, the owner has to be available to the developers all the time; this may or may not be true to the Sponsor. Secondly, the owner leads the development of the backlog; the Sponsor usually just approves the product and project scopes.
