Recursive nameserver

A recursive nameserver (alternatively spelled, recursive name server; also known as recursive domain server, caching-only nameserver or DNS cache; hereinafter, the Server) is any nameserver that provides DNS name resolution based on its requests to authoritative nameservers.

Some nameservers can also perform more than just the Server. They can function as authoritative nameservers.
