Span of control is the number of subordinates a manager can effectively and efficiently direct.

According to Organizational Behavior by Robbins and Judge (17th edition),

Span of control. The number of subordinates a manager can effectively and efficiently direct.

According to Management by Robbins and Coulter (14th edition),

Span of control. The number of employees a manager can efficiently and effectively manage.

According to the HRBoK Guide,

Span of control. The number of employees a manager supervises. The number of employees who report to one manager in an organization. The more people that a manager supervises, the wider the span of control.
