Work-related competence refers to the competence that a worker needs to handle job tasks in a particular occupation, industry, or position at expected levels of effectiveness and efficiency.
The whole competence can be related to one or more of three domains.
Occupation-required competence is the aggregate of knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a particular occupation. For instance, an accountant is required to know a thing or two about accounting and not only know, but also practice and be able, let's say, to debit, credit accounts and be skilled to do a general ledger and be able to create balance sheet, income statement and so forth.
Another domain, industry-related competence refers to the competence related to work in a particular industry. For instance, an accountant practicing accounting in aerospace industry would know something different than an accountant, let's say, in film production. So debit and credits would be treated the same, but practices, taxes, expenses can be different. That is why the industry-related competence comes into play. But even if you know debits and credits, even if you know how expenses are calculated in aerospace industry you still need to know how to read and write, you need something more general. Also known as administrative competence.
Among the three, this domain is the biggest. Administrative competence is the aggregate of knowledge, skills, and abilities that is needed to undertake enterprise efforts conceptually, regardless of specific industry or occupation. This domain can be further chunked into operational competence, interpersonal competence, and enterprise competence.
KSAs are frequently used to describe the sought competences and select those employment candidates who match employment vacancies best.
