Career administration is a set of endeavors undertaken in order to administer one's career. Why does your career need to be administered?
Few people would argue that businesses need to be administered or, at least, managed. That was why business administration emerged as the mainstream offer at business schools.
Unless you are self-employed, your career is your business. Unless you look for those jobs that are always available and need little requirements, your business might be more complex than businesses like convenience stores or barber shops that are around for a while.
To be employable meaningfully, you need to (a) have something to offer, (b) know what employer needs what you offer and is able to motivate you best, and (c) be able to land the job. According to the Employability Model, your career administration may include three different career strategies.
Your value proposition should describe what you offer. Investing in your competence could be the first strategy. However, you shall identify what competence would lead to your higher employability.
Thus, the market research may be your second strategy. According to the Work Motivation Model, you should look for some combination of the nature of work, employee compensation, and work-life fit that motivates you best.
Finally, it is not enough to have something to offer to your employer and know the employer who needs a worker like you. Your marketing strategy should match you and the dream employer to make your employment happen.
Job market research, boosting one's work-related competence and powering of your job marketing shall be the areas of career administration responsibilities.
