The effect ofunsafe norms may range from the relatively benign, such asdetermining accepted meeting times, to the inherently unsafe, such as signing off on incomplete maintenance tasks. Anybehavior commonly accepted by the group, whether as astandard operating procedure (SOP) or not, can be a norm. Supervisors need to ensure that everyone adheres to the same standards and not tolerate unsafe norms. If a person is engaged in something that he thinks is not worth doing, he will often keep a cynical and perfunctory attitude. Not only is the success rate small, and even if successful, will not feel much sense of accomplishment.
