Configuration is a characteristic of a system element, or project artifact, describing their maturity or performance.

According to the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (4th edition),
- Configuration. A characteristic of a system element, or project artifact, describing their maturity or performance.
According to the ITIL Foundation 4e by Axelos,
- Configuration. An arrangement of configuration items (CIs) or other resources that work together to deliver a product or service. Can also be used to describe the parameter settings for one or more CIs.
