- In the United States, a professional license is a designation earned by a person from a state agency that allows this person to exercise some occupation like a public school teacher or a medical doctor. Professional licenses usually require the university title for that profession.
- Trade certificates can be earned from a professional society, certification body, or, possibly, from a private certification authority to assure qualification to perform a job or job task. Some trade certificates like Project Management Professional (PMP) must be renewed periodically or may be valid for a specific period (e.g., the lifetime of the product upon which the individual is certified).
